End User How To FTP: Step by Step
  Getting Started

Before you begin you will need the following;

FTP Client Software

Your account details (These should have been emailed to you when you set your account up).

Please note, the software we use in the example is available for free download by clicking here, it is free to trial and it will make following the example much easier.

If you’re not using the program in this example try to find a part of the program you are using where you can enter your account details. This should be similar to the following image, you should only need a hostname, username and password.

If you have found this section then please enter your user information and then press the connect button.

FTP with WS-FTP

Step1. Create an account

Once you have loaded WS-FTP press the ‘Create Site’ (Highlighted in blue in the image to the right) Button. You will now have to enter a name for the site and choose where you want to store it (This information is only important in WS-FTP and is to make connecting to the site easier later on).

Once you have entered this information click the ‘next’ button.  You will now be asked for a Hostname/IP Address. You need to enter ftp.domainname.any replacing domainname.any with your own website address, Click next to continue.

Now you will be asked for your user ID, Password and account.  Don’t worry about account, this can be left blank.

Your username will normally be admin@yourdomain.any (replacing yourdomain.any with your website address)

Now enter your FTP password. Now click finish.

Step 2.  Connecting to your Web space

Highlight your site by clicking on it once and then press the connect button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

You should now be connected to your web space in a few seconds.

  Step 3.  Uploading your Website

Now you should have two large white boxes side by side with some buttons in the middle.  The large box on the left is for the files that are on your computer. Simply browse to where you have saved your website.

Now simply select the files you want to upload and then press the green arrow button pointing right (in between the two big white boxes)

Now your files should be uploaded to the web server.  Please bear in mind that your home page should be called either default or index.

Although this seems like a lot of hassle it does make the process much quicker and easier in the future. Doing all this is only a one off.  If you close WS-FTP and reopen it when you named your site earlier it will be saved in the My Sites folder that appears to you on start up.  This will also save your username and password if you chose to tick the boxes when you entered them.
